Advanced Collocations
Ready to sound like a native speaker? Let's master adverbs, adjectives, and the tricky "Make vs. Do" verbs.
Types of Collocations
Words partner up in different ways.
In Part 1, we learned that collocations are word chunks. Now, let's look at the structures. A very common type is Adverb + Adjective. For example, we don't say "very cold" if we want to sound advanced; we say "bitterly cold".
Another type is Verb + Adverb. If you want to say sorry in a very strong way, you apologize profusely.
Finally, there is the classic problem for English learners: Make vs. Do. You "make a mistake" but you "do your best". Mastering these combinations will boost your confidence immensely!
